REG 7 AUG 19

Shanghai, 26th March, 1899.

Medical Report.

On Charles Bithrey, prisoner in H.B.M's Consular Gaol.

Charles Bithrey, aged 34, has been confined in the Gaol since 31st August 1898.

He was subject to epileptic fits about 12 years ago, but has been free from them for several years past; there is no history of injury to the head, or of syphilis.

The first epileptic attack in Gaol occurred on 26th September, while he was at shot drill. It was of moderate severity lasting about 5 minutes with complete loss of consciousness and general muscular spasm. Three attacks came on in October, but under the influence of Bromide of Sodium they were arrested till February, when they returned nearly every other day. He was then sent to the Hospital for more thorough observation, but remained only one day. The convulsive stage of the fits usually lasted 10 to 15 minutes, was frequently preceded by the epileptic cry, the head was thrown back, and there was partial opisthotonos; vomiting would sometimes last for some hours afterwards.
